Fällning

Fällning is a Swedish noun with several distinct meanings depending on context. The word derives from fälla, meaning to fell or to drop, and in each usage it denotes something that is brought down, separated, or precipitated.

In forestry, fällning denotes the act of cutting down trees as part of timber harvest. It can refer to individual tree felling or to broader harvesting operations (avverkning) that remove a stand. Fällning is planned and regulated by forestry practice, safety rules, and environmental considerations.

In chemistry and materials science, fällning means precipitation—the formation of a solid from a solution when ions meet and form an insoluble compound. The solid produced is a precipitate, called a fällning in Swedish. Precipitation reactions are used for qualitative analysis and purification, with examples such as the formation of a precipitate when silver ions meet halide ions.

In criminal law, fällning refers to a conviction, i.e., the court's finding of guilt. The term commonly appears in the phrase fällande dom. The opposite is friande dom, an acquittal.
