Fuktproblem, or moisture problems, describe excessive moisture in a building’s structure or indoor environment. They occur when moisture levels exceed what materials and air can safely handle, leading to material damage, reduced comfort, and potential health concerns.

Causes include water intrusion from leaks, plumbing faults, flooding, or poor drainage; rising damp from ground moisture; condensation produced by temperature and humidity differences; and insufficient ventilation or insulation. Common types are rising damp, penetrating damp, condensation damp, and hidden damp, which may overlap in a single building.

Symptoms include damp patches on walls or ceilings, staining and peeling paint or wallpaper, a musty odor, mold growth, warped wood, efflorescence on masonry, and cold or damp surfaces. Long-term moisture can weaken structures and reduce energy efficiency.

Health and safety considerations: prolonged dampness and mold exposure can aggravate respiratory conditions and allergies, particularly for children, the elderly, and those with existing conditions. Moisture also accelerates material deterioration, affecting structural integrity and indoor climate.

Prevention and control involve proper drainage and grading around the building, reliable roof and plumbing maintenance, installing moisture barriers and vapor control layers, ensuring adequate ventilation, and keeping indoor humidity at appropriate levels. Addressing sources of moisture promptly is essential.

Remediation typically requires professional assessment to identify the moisture source, repair leaks, dry affected areas, improve ventilation, and remediate mold. Damaged materials may need replacement. Many jurisdictions provide guidelines and building codes addressing dampness limits and required remediation standards.
