Fukang

Fukang is a county-level city in northern Xinjiang, China. It is administered by Changji Hui Autonomous Prefecture and lies in the northern Tian Shan region within the Junggar Basin. The area has a semi-arid climate characterized by hot summers and cold winters, with a landscape that blends irrigated agricultural land with steppe and low hills.

The local economy is largely driven by agriculture, supported by light industry and services. Surrounding farmland produces grain, cotton, and fruit, aided by irrigation from regional rivers. Fukang also serves as a regional transportation and logistics hub, with road connections to other parts of Xinjiang. The population is in the hundreds of thousands and includes multiple ethnic groups, among them Han and Hui residents.

Fukang is notable in meteoritics for the Fukang meteorite, a rare stony-iron pallasite discovered near the city in 2000. The meteorite is celebrated for its well-preserved olivine crystals and has been the subject of extensive study and public exhibits, contributing to research on planetary materials and meteorite processing.

In addition to its agricultural and meteorite significance, Fukang functions as a local center for administration, commerce, and culture within northern Xinjiang, reflecting the region’s broader mix of urban development and rural livelihoods.
