Frysetørkesykluser, also known as lyophilization cycles, are a multi-step process used to remove water from a product by freezing it and then reducing the surrounding pressure to allow the frozen water to sublimate directly from the solid phase to the gas phase. This technique is widely employed in various industries, including pharmaceuticals, food production, and biotechnology, to preserve sensitive materials.

The typical freeze-drying cycle begins with pre-freezing the material to a temperature below its triple point, ensuring all water is converted to ice. This is followed by the primary drying phase, where the pressure within the freeze-dryer is significantly reduced. Under these conditions, the ice undergoes sublimation, turning directly into water vapor without melting. This vapor is then collected by a condenser, typically cooled to a very low temperature, where it freezes back into ice.

The final stage is secondary drying, also known as desorption. During this phase, the temperature is gradually increased while maintaining the vacuum. This step removes any residual, unfrozen bound water molecules that were not removed during primary drying. The entire cycle is carefully controlled to ensure the integrity and stability of the dried product. The duration and specific parameters of each phase can vary depending on the product's characteristics, such as its composition, initial moisture content, and desired final dryness. Proper execution of freeze-drying cycles is critical for achieving high-quality, long-lasting preserved products.
