This principle is utilized in various applications, such as de-icing roads in winter by spreading salt. The salt dissolves in any existing ice or snow, creating a brine that remains liquid at temperatures below 0 degrees Celsius, preventing further ice formation or melting existing ice.

Another everyday example is found in cooking. Adding sugar to water for making ice cream or sorbet lowers its freezing point, allowing it to freeze at a lower temperature and achieve a smoother texture. Antifreeze in car radiators works on the same principle. By adding ethylene glycol or propylene glycol to the water in a car's cooling system, the freezing point is significantly lowered, preventing the coolant from freezing and damaging the engine in cold weather.
