They vary by jurisdiction and context. Common categories include statutory deadlines (established by statute), regulatory deadlines (set by agencies), filing or appeal deadlines, and performance or payment deadlines in contracts.

Calculation: The triggering event may be a specified date, receipt of notice, or completion of an action. Counting may use calendar days or business days; some jurisdictions exclude weekends and holidays, others do not. If a deadline falls on a non-working day, it is often extended to the next working day, unless stated otherwise. Some deadlines can be extended by agreement, tolling, or official extension.

Consequences: Failing to meet a frist can forfeit rights, lead to rejection of an application, penalties, or contract termination. In some cases, relief may be available by appeal, reopening, or waiver, but these are usually limited and time-bound.

Practical notes: Organizations track deadlines with calendars or digital reminders; clarify start points (date of notice, date of event); verify whether holidays apply; consult applicable rules for exceptions.
