Friktionoscillationer, often translated as friction-induced oscillations or stick-slip oscillations, are self-excited vibrations that occur in systems where friction plays a significant role. These oscillations arise from the dynamic interplay between the motion of surfaces and the frictional forces that oppose it. When one surface attempts to slide over another, friction is generated. However, the coefficient of friction can vary with the state of motion, often decreasing after initial static contact is broken. This phenomenon, known as the "kinetic friction effect" or "velocity-dependent friction," can lead to a cyclical process.

Initially, static friction prevents motion. As an external force overcomes static friction, the surfaces begin to slide. During this sliding phase, the kinetic friction is typically lower. If the system's dynamics are such that the surfaces accelerate, the kinetic friction might decrease further, allowing for rapid movement. However, as the relative velocity approaches zero, static friction once again takes over, arresting the motion. This cycle of sticking (static friction) and slipping (kinetic friction) can repeat, leading to observable vibrations or audible noises.

Common examples include the squeaking of brakes, the singing of wine glasses by rubbing their rims, and chatter in machine tools. The characteristics of friktionoscillationer depend on the material properties of the surfaces in contact, the normal force pressing them together, the relative speed, and the mechanical properties of the system, such as stiffness and damping. Understanding and mitigating these oscillations are crucial in many engineering applications to prevent wear, noise, and potential system failure.
