Freren

Freren is a municipality in the district of Emsland, in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is located approximately 10 kilometers south of the Dutch border and 25 kilometers southwest of the city of Lingen. As of December 2023, Freren has a population of 5,181. The municipality covers an area of 54.56 square kilometers.

The history of Freren can be traced back to the Middle Ages, with evidence of settlement in the region dating to the 9th century. The town developed around a fortified settlement and became an important market town. Freren received its town charter in 1404. The local economy has historically been based on agriculture and trade.

Administratively, Freren is part of the Samtgemeinde Freren, a collective municipality comprising several smaller communities. The town itself features a historic town center with a church and some older buildings. Freren is connected by road to surrounding towns and cities, and the nearest train station is in Lingen.
