Frekvensshift

Frekvensshift, often translated as frequency shift, refers to the change in frequency of a wave. This phenomenon is most commonly observed in the Doppler effect, where the perceived frequency of a wave emitted by a moving source is altered by the relative motion between the source and the observer. If the source is moving towards the observer, the frequency appears higher, a phenomenon known as a blueshift in the case of light. Conversely, if the source is moving away from the observer, the frequency appears lower, resulting in a redshift for light.

The Doppler effect is not limited to light waves; it applies to all types of waves, including sound waves. For sound, a moving source or observer results in a change in pitch. An ambulance siren sounds higher pitched as it approaches and lower pitched as it recedes. The magnitude of the frequency shift is directly proportional to the relative velocity.

Beyond the Doppler effect, frequency shifts can occur in other contexts, such as signal processing and telecommunications. In radio transmission, frequency modulation (FM) utilizes a carrier wave whose frequency is varied in accordance with the modulating signal. Here, the term "shift" refers to the deviation from the central carrier frequency. In essence, any process that alters the original frequency of a wave can be described as a frequency shift. Understanding frequency shifts is crucial in fields ranging from astronomy and physics to engineering and radar technology.
