Frekvenciaszámlálók, also known as frequency counters, are electronic instruments used to measure the frequency of a signal. They are essential tools in many fields, including electronics, telecommunications, and scientific research.

The basic principle of operation for a frequency counter involves counting the number of oscillations of an unknown periodic signal over a precise time interval. This count is then displayed as the frequency, typically in Hertz (Hz), Kilohertz (kHz), Megahertz (MHz), or Gigahertz (GHz).

Modern frequency counters employ sophisticated digital circuitry. They typically include an input amplifier to condition the incoming signal, a time base generator (usually a crystal oscillator) to provide a highly accurate reference frequency, and a digital counter circuit. The counter circuit registers the number of signal cycles that occur within the precisely defined time window set by the time base.

To ensure accuracy, the time base must be very stable. This is achieved through high-precision quartz crystals, often temperature-compensated or oven-controlled to minimize drift. The measurement accuracy of a frequency counter is directly related to the stability and accuracy of its time base.

Frequency counters are available in various forms, from handheld portable units to benchtop instruments with advanced features. Applications range from checking the output frequency of radio transmitters and signal generators to verifying the clock speed of microprocessors and measuring the resonant frequencies of circuits. They are indispensable for calibration, testing, and troubleshooting electronic systems.
