Fotouczulaczami, also known as photosensitizers, are chemical compounds that can absorb light energy and then transfer this energy to other molecules, initiating a chemical reaction. This process, known as photosensitization, is fundamental to many biological and chemical phenomena. In biological systems, the most well-known example is chlorophyll, the photosensitizer in plants that absorbs sunlight to power photosynthesis. Other naturally occurring photosensitizers in humans include porphyrins, which play roles in hemoglobin and are involved in oxygen transport.

Photosensitizers have a wide range of applications. In medicine, they are used in photodynamic therapy (PDT) to treat various cancers and skin conditions. In PDT, a photosensitizer is administered to the patient and accumulates in the target tissue. When exposed to specific wavelengths of light, the photosensitizer becomes activated and produces reactive oxygen species that destroy diseased cells. This targeted approach minimizes damage to surrounding healthy tissues.

Beyond medicine, photosensitizers are utilized in industrial processes such as photopolymerization, where light-induced polymerization is used to create plastics, coatings, and adhesives. They are also employed in photocatalysis, a process that uses light energy to accelerate chemical reactions, with applications in environmental remediation and the production of chemicals. The development of new and more efficient photosensitizers continues to be an active area of research, promising further advancements in diverse scientific and technological fields.
