Fototransduktiomenetelmiä refers to the various techniques and processes by which light energy is converted into a different form of energy, often electrical or chemical. This fundamental process is central to many biological and technological applications. In biological systems, phototransduction is most famously observed in the eyes of animals, where photoreceptor cells (rods and cones) convert photons of light into electrical signals that are then transmitted to the brain, enabling vision. This involves a cascade of molecular events initiated by the absorption of light by a photopigment.

In technology, phototransduction principles are employed in a wide array of devices. Solar cells, or photovoltaic devices, are a prime example, converting sunlight directly into electricity using semiconductor materials. The photoelectric effect, where light striking a material causes electrons to be emitted, is a key mechanism behind many of these technologies. Other applications include light sensors, photodetectors used in cameras and optical communication systems, and optogenetic tools that use light to control genetically modified cells, particularly neurons, to study their function. The specific method employed often depends on the wavelength of light being detected or utilized, the desired output signal, and the material properties of the transducing element. Research continues to advance phototransduction methods for greater efficiency and novel applications.
