Fotongeneraatiot refers to the generation of photons, the quanta of light. In Finnish science and technology contexts it describes processes and devices that produce light at the quantum level, including natural emission and engineered photon sources. The concept covers fundamental mechanisms as well as practical applications in communications, imaging, and quantum technologies.

Key mechanisms include spontaneous emission from excited atoms or quantum emitters and stimulated emission as used in lasers. Nonlinear optical processes generate new photons through frequency conversion, such as second- and higher-harmonic generation, and parametric processes like down-conversion and four-wave mixing. Solid-state systems such as quantum dots and color centers are important photon generators.
