Fotonentomografie

Fotonentomografie, also known as photon counting tomography or spectral CT, is an advanced medical imaging technique that offers significant improvements over conventional CT scans. Unlike traditional CT which measures the total attenuation of X-rays, fotonentomografie utilizes photon-counting detectors that can distinguish X-ray photons based on their energy. This allows for the acquisition of energy-resolved information for each measured photon.

The core principle involves an X-ray source emitting photons with a spectrum of energies, and a detector that not only counts the number of photons but also measures their individual energy levels. As these photons pass through the patient's body, they are attenuated differently depending on the material composition and the photon energy. By analyzing the energy spectrum of the detected photons, fotonentomografie can reconstruct images with enhanced material differentiation and reduced noise.

This technology provides several key advantages. It can generate virtual monoenergetic images, allowing for optimized contrast visualization at different energy levels. This is particularly beneficial for imaging iodine-based contrast agents, where specific energy levels can highlight vessels more effectively. Furthermore, fotonentomografie enables material decomposition, meaning it can distinguish between different tissues and materials, such as bone, soft tissue, and contrast agents, in a single scan. This capability opens up new diagnostic possibilities, potentially reducing the need for multiple scans or different imaging modalities. The improved signal-to-noise ratio and reduced radiation dose are also significant benefits for patient safety and diagnostic accuracy.
