It refers to a process where a material, typically a liquid resin or monomer, undergoes a chemical change and solidifies or hardens when exposed to light, usually ultraviolet (UV) light. This light energy initiates a chain reaction among the molecules in the material, causing them to link together and form a solid polymer network.

This phenomenon is the fundamental principle behind many modern technologies. In the field of 3D printing, specifically stereolithography (SLA) and digital light processing (DLP), photopolymerization is used to build objects layer by layer. A UV light source selectively cures the liquid resin in the shape of each layer, gradually constructing the final three-dimensional object.
