Fotodimerizarea is a photochemical reaction in which two molecules, typically unsaturated organic compounds, combine to form a dimer when exposed to light. This process involves the absorption of photons, which excites the molecules to a reactive state. The excited molecules then undergo a cycloaddition reaction, forming new covalent bonds between them. Common examples of molecules that undergo fotodimerization include alkenes, alkynes, and aromatic compounds, particularly those with conjugated pi systems. The wavelength of light required for fotodimerization is specific to the molecule and is often in the ultraviolet or visible spectrum.
