In the plant kingdom, soybeans are a very rich source, and lecithin derived from soybeans is a common commercial source of phospholipids. Other plant sources include sunflower seeds, peanuts, and various vegetables.

Phospholipids play crucial roles in biological systems beyond forming cell membranes. They are essential for nutrient absorption, transport of fats, and signal transduction within cells. Some phospholipids, like phosphatidylcholine, are precursors to important signaling molecules. Industrially, phospholipids, often extracted as lecithin, are used as emulsifiers, stabilizers, and nutritional supplements in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries due to their amphipathic properties. Understanding phospholipid sources is therefore relevant to nutrition, biology, and various industrial applications.
