Fosforylointiketju, also known as phosphorylation cascade, is a signaling pathway in cell biology. It involves a series of enzyme-catalyzed reactions where a phosphate group is transferred from one molecule to another. Typically, this process begins with an external signal, such as a hormone or growth factor, binding to a receptor on the cell surface. This binding activates a specific enzyme, often a kinase, which then phosphorylates (adds a phosphate group to) another protein. This newly phosphorylated protein, in turn, activates another enzyme, and so on, creating a chain reaction.

A single activated kinase can phosphorylate many molecules of the next enzyme in the pathway, leading to a significant increase in the overall response.
