Fosfaattiryhmällä refers to a phosphate group. A phosphate group is an inorganic chemical compound with the formula PO4^3-. It is a functional group derived from phosphoric acid (H3PO4). This structural role is vital for storing and transmitting genetic information.

Furthermore, phosphate groups are involved in the regulation of enzyme activity through a process called phosphorylation. In phosphorylation, a phosphate group is covalently attached to a protein, altering its shape and thereby activating or deactivating it. This reversible modification plays a key role in cellular signaling pathways. In geology, phosphate minerals are common and are the source of phosphorus for fertilizers.
