They are fundamental components of many biological molecules and play crucial roles in a wide range of chemical, biological, and industrial processes. In living organisms, phosphate groups are most prominently found in nucleotides— the building blocks of DNA and RNA— and in adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the primary energy currency of cells.
