Formkörper

Formkörper is a term used in geometry to describe a three-dimensional geometric object in space that encloses a finite volume. In standard usage, a Formkörper is a solid whose interior is bounded by a closed two-dimensional surface. The concept serves as the three-dimensional analogue to planar figures and is common in school mathematics as a basis for understanding volume and surface area.

Formkörper can have various types of surfaces. They may be polyhedral, meaning their boundary consists of flat faces (for example, cube, rectangular prism, pyramid), or they may have curved surfaces (such as cylinder, cone, or sphere, also referred to as kugel in German). Many solids can be formed by simple construction methods, including extrusion of a plane figure, revolution of a plane figure around an axis, or by intersection and union of simpler solids.
