Formgerða

Formgerða is a linguistic term that refers to the set of word forms a lexeme can take to signal grammatical or derivational information. It encompasses how words change form to reflect categories such as tense, mood, person, number, gender, case, and definiteness, as well as how new words are created through derivation or compounding. In this sense, formgerða distinguishes itself from syntax (sentence structure) and phonology (sound structure), focusing on the internal structure of individual words.

The study of formgerða includes inflection, where a word’s form varies to express grammatical meaning while typically retaining its core category, and derivation, where new words are formed and often change word class or meaning. Analyzed forms are organized into paradigms or inflectional classes that reveal regular patterns and irregular forms. Morphological analysis breaks a surface form into morphemes, the smallest units of meaning, to understand how the form is constructed.

Languages differ in how they realize formgerða. Some are fusional, combining several grammatical categories into single affixes; others are agglutinative, attaching multiple affixes in a regular sequence; and some are isolating, relying largely on lexical items with minimal inflection. Morphology interacts with phonology, as phonological changes can alter morpheme realization, giving rise to morphophonological alternations.
