Formgedächtnissystemen, often translated as "shape memory systems," refers to a class of materials and engineered constructs that exhibit a remarkable ability to return to a predetermined shape after being deformed. This phenomenon is primarily attributed to the unique properties of shape memory alloys (SMAs) and shape memory polymers (SMPs).

Shape memory alloys are metallic materials that can undergo a reversible phase transformation. When heated above a certain transition temperature, they return to their original, pre-programmed shape. This transformation is driven by changes in the crystal structure of the alloy. Common SMAs include Nickel-Titanium (Nitinol).

Shape memory polymers are synthetic polymers that can be deformed at one temperature and recover their original shape when exposed to a specific stimulus, typically heat. This recovery is achieved through the rearrangement of polymer chains. SMPs offer advantages in terms of lower cost and lighter weight compared to SMAs.

The underlying principle for both SMAs and SMPs involves storing "memory" of the original shape within the material's structure. This memory can be encoded during a manufacturing process. When the material is subjected to a stimulus (usually temperature change), the stored energy is released, driving the material back to its original configuration.

Applications for formgedächtnissystemen are diverse and growing. They are found in medical devices such as stents and orthodontic wires, where their ability to deploy or exert controlled force is invaluable. In aerospace, they are used for deployable structures and actuators. Other areas include robotics, automotive components, and even consumer products like self-adjusting eyewear. The continued research and development in this field promise even more innovative uses for these intelligent materials.
