Formalizase

Formalizase is a verb form found in some Iberian Romance languages, primarily associated with the verb formalizar and its reflexive variant formalizar-se. In modern standard usage, the form is considered archaic or regional, with more common modern equivalents being formalizasse or formalizara in the subjunctive mood, depending on the language.

Etymology and morphology

The term derives from the root formal- meaning “having form” or “official,” combined with recognisable Romance verb endings. As a conjugated form, formalizase can appear as a third-person singular in certain tenses and moods, most notably in the imperfect subjunctive of formalizar-se, or in older/alternative spellings of the imperfect subjunctive of formalizar. The reflexive pronoun se marks voice and agency in clauses involving the subject acting upon itself.

Usage

Formalizase occurs mainly in subordinate clauses that express doubt, possibility, hypothetical situations, or wishes. In Spanish, it can appear as se formalizase in the imperfect subjunctive: Si él se formalizase el contrato, sería válido. In Portuguese, the analogous form would more commonly appear as se ele se formalizasse, though historical texts may show formalizase as well. Modern normative forms tend to use the -asse variant (formalizasse) or other standard subjunctive endings.
