Formaliinia

Formaliinia, commonly referred to as formalin, is an aqueous solution of formaldehyde gas. Commercial preparations typically contain about 37% formaldehyde by weight and are stabilized with methanol to prevent polymerization. The solution is colorless, has a strong, pungent odor, and is miscible with water. The active ingredient is formaldehyde (CH2O), and the solution may include buffering agents or stabilizers to maintain stability.

Formaliinia is widely used in biomedical and scientific settings as a fixative and preservative. In histology and pathology, it fixes tissues by cross-linking proteins, preserving cellular and tissue structure for subsequent staining and microscopic examination. It also serves as a disinfectant and preservative for specimens in laboratories, museums, and medical facilities, and has applications in embalming and anatomical specimen preservation.

Safety and health considerations are prominent for formaliinia. Formaldehyde is toxic and a known irritant; exposure can irritate the eyes, nose, throat, and lungs, and longer-term exposure has been associated with carcinogenic risks. Skin contact can cause irritation and sensitization. Because of these hazards, formalin is typically handled under controlled conditions with adequate ventilation and personal protective equipment, and is subject to regulatory controls in many jurisdictions.

Storage and disposal require care. Formaliinia should be kept in tightly closed, clearly labeled containers, away from heat and oxidizers, ideally in a designated cabinet or fume-controlled area. It is disposed of as hazardous waste according to local regulations and institutional policies.
