Formaadisõjas, often translated as "format war," refers to a historical competition between incompatible technologies, products, or standards within a particular market. The primary goal for each competitor is to have their format become the dominant or "de facto" standard, thereby forcing competitors to either adopt their format or become obsolete.

These wars typically arise in industries where interoperability is crucial, such as consumer electronics, software, or media storage. Examples include the VHS versus Betamax videotape format war in the 1980s, where VHS ultimately prevailed due to longer recording times and lower manufacturing costs, despite Betamax being considered by many to have superior video quality. Another significant format war was fought between the Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD formats for high-definition optical discs, with Blu-ray eventually emerging as the victor.

The outcome of a format war often has substantial implications for consumers, businesses, and the long-term direction of technological development. The winning format usually benefits from network effects, where its widespread adoption makes it more valuable and attractive to new users, further solidifying its dominance. Companies that back the losing format can suffer significant financial losses and market share erosion.
