Fonttikokoa

Fonttikokoa is a Finnish-origin typeface family and design project developed by the Fonttikokoa Collective. It aims to provide a legible, contemporary sans-serif suitable for both screen and print contexts, with an emphasis on neutrality, versatility, and Nordic sensibility.

The project began in Helsinki in the early 2010s, with the first release in 2016 featuring three weights and matching italics. It has since expanded into a broad family, including a variable font version released in the late 2010s, and ongoing additions for expanded language support.

Fonttikokoa's design combines geometric structure with subtle humanist touches. It has a tall x-height, open counters, and rounded terminals that improve legibility at small sizes. The letterforms include a distinctive i dot and carefully tuned diacritics to accommodate Finnish, Swedish, Norwegian, and other Nordic languages. The overall aesthetic aims for a balanced, unobtrusive presence suitable for prolonged reading.

Technically, the typeface supports OpenType features such as ligatures and contextual alternates, and is distributed in OTF/TTF and web formats (WOFF/WOFF2). The variable version exposes weight and width axes, enabling fine-grained adjustments for on-screen UI and print materials. It covers Latin Extended character sets to support a wide range of Western languages.

Usage and reception: Fonttikokoa has been adopted by several Finnish universities and municipal websites, and is used by design studios for editorial work and signage. Critics have noted its clean neutrality and Nordic character, and it has influenced subsequent Nordic sans-serif developments.
