Foligno

Foligno is a city and comune in the province of Perugia in Umbria, Italy. It is located in the southeastern part of the region, in the wide valley of the Clitunno River, a tributary of the Tiber. Foligno is a major transportation hub and an important agricultural and industrial center.

The city's history dates back to ancient times, with evidence of settlement since the Neolithic period. It rose to prominence in Roman times as Fulginia, a significant town on the Via Flaminia. During the Middle Ages, Foligno was a free commune and a center of art and culture, particularly during the Renaissance. It was the birthplace of the painter Niccolò di Liberatore, known as l'Alunno.

Among Foligno's notable landmarks are the Duomo, dedicated to San Feliciano, the city's patron saint, and the Palazzo dei Priori, which houses the Pinacoteca Comunale. The historic center also features the Torre Comunale and various medieval churches.

Foligno is renowned for its annual Quintana, a medieval jousting tournament that recreates the city's historical splendor. The event involves costumed participants and a thrilling horse race between the city's seven districts. The local economy is diverse, with strengths in manufacturing, particularly in the paper and publishing industries, as well as agriculture. The region is also known for its olive oil and wine production. Foligno serves as a gateway to the scenic Valle Umbra and the nearby Monti Sibillini National Park.
