Fockutrymmen
Fockutrymmen is a Swedish term that translates to "forepeak" in English. It refers to the foremost lower compartment of a ship, typically located beneath the deck and behind the stem. This space is often used for storage of sails, ropes, anchors, and other nautical equipment. In older sailing vessels, the forepeak could also serve as crew quarters for the lower-ranking sailors. Its location at the very front of the vessel means it is often the first part to encounter waves, making it a somewhat damp and uncomfortable area. The term is also used in naval architecture to describe the forward-most hull section. Access to the forepeak is usually through a hatch on the main deck. The design and exact use of the forepeak can vary depending on the type and size of the vessel.
