FlüssigphasenExtraktion (LPE) is a separation technique used to extract one or more components from a liquid mixture. It is based on the principle that different substances have different solubilities in two immiscible liquids. The process involves the use of a solvent that is immiscible with the feed mixture, allowing the desired components to be selectively extracted into the solvent phase.

The LPE process typically consists of three main stages: extraction, washing, and stripping. In the extraction stage, the feed mixture is contacted with the solvent in a mixer-settler or a column. The desired components are transferred from the feed to the solvent phase due to their higher solubility. The resulting two-phase system is then separated into the solvent-rich and the raffinate (feed-depleted) phases.

The washing stage involves the contact of the solvent-rich phase with a wash solvent to remove any remaining impurities from the raffinate. This step helps to improve the purity of the extracted components.

In the stripping stage, the solvent-rich phase is contacted with a stripping agent to recover the extracted components. The stripping agent is chosen such that it has a higher affinity for the extracted components than the solvent. The stripped solvent is then recycled back to the extraction stage, while the recovered components are obtained as a separate phase.

LPE is widely used in various industries, including chemical, pharmaceutical, and food processing, for the purification and separation of valuable components from complex mixtures. It offers several advantages, such as high selectivity, flexibility in solvent choice, and the ability to handle a wide range of feed compositions. However, it also has some limitations, including the need for additional equipment for phase separation and the potential for solvent loss or contamination.
