Flygrutter

Flygrutter is a term used in ecological and hobbyist contexts to describe a portable trap intended to attract and capture flying insects, particularly fruit flies and houseflies. The term is informal and not tied to a single standardized design; it can refer to several DIY constructions or commercially sold traps that operate on similar principles.

Most flygrutters rely on a lure or attractant to draw flies into a confinement area. Common approaches include ultraviolet or warm light, scented attractants, pheromones, or CO2; captures are achieved with sticky surfaces, a one-way entrance funnel, or a gentle suction to prevent escape. Enclosures are typically translucent to ease observation and measurement.

In research, flygrutters are used to sample fly populations, assess diel activity patterns, or test repellents and attractants. In education or home settings, they may serve to reduce nuisance by trapping flies indoors or outdoors. The devices vary widely in size, from pocket traps to larger benchtop models.

The term's etymology is unclear; "fly" is the obvious target, and "grutter" appears in some Scandinavian language sources but has no official meaning in standard trap nomenclature. Because the phrase is informal, users should refer to specific product specifications or scholarly methods when selecting or evaluating a flytrap.
