Fluxesquantities

Fluxesquantities is a coined term used to describe the broad class of physical quantities that quantify the transport of a property through a boundary. The concept emphasizes the distinction between a local field (such as a vector field representing a flow) and the global amount that crosses a surface per unit time. In practice, fluxesquantities encompass both flux densities (per unit area) and total flux across a surface, depending on the specific field and context.

Mathematically, for a vector field F defined over a surface S with outward normal n, the flux through S is Φ = ∮_S F · n dA. This surface integral form connects to the divergence theorem, which relates surface flux to a volume integral of the divergence: Φ = ∭_V ∇·F dV. Fluxesquantities thus provide a bridge between local field behavior and global transfer over boundaries, applicable across disciplines such as electromagnetism, heat transfer, mass transport, and fluid dynamics.

Units and measurement of fluxesquantities are field-dependent. For example, heat flux density is measured in W/m^2, magnetic flux is measured in webers, and electric flux relates to coulombs through Gauss’s law.
