Fluoroethylene

Fluoroethylene, commonly referred to as vinyl fluoride, is a fluorinated hydrocarbon with the formula C2H3F. It is the monomer for polyvinyl fluoride (PVF) and is systematically named 1-fluoroethene. The molecule features a vinyl group (CH2=CH–) with a fluorine atom attached to one of the double-bond carbons.

Industrial production of vinyl fluoride involves fluorination of hydrocarbons such as ethylene or acetylene under controlled catalytic conditions, using fluorinating reagents. The process must suppress unwanted polymerization and side reactions. Due to its reactivity, it is typically stored and transported as a stabilized monomer under appropriate inhibitors and pressures, and is handled with suitable corrosion-resistant equipment.

Vinyl fluoride is a colorless gas at room temperature with a boiling point well below ambient conditions. It is flammable and toxic by inhalation, and exposure requires proper ventilation and protective equipment. Its primary use is as a monomer for polyvinyl fluoride resins and coatings, which exhibit high chemical resistance and are used in protective films, laminates, and specialty coatings. It also serves as an intermediate in the synthesis of other fluorinated compounds and polymers.

Safety and regulation: vinyl fluoride requires careful handling to prevent exposure and polymerization; it is subject to chemical-licensing, transport, and storage regulations. Polymerization inhibitors are routinely added during storage and transportation.
