Flotisaatiolla

Flotisaatiolla, often translated as flotation or flotatization, is a physico-chemical process primarily used in mineral processing and wastewater treatment. It relies on the principle that some solid particles will attach to air bubbles and rise to the surface, while others will not. This differential attachment allows for the separation of different components within a mixture.

In mineral processing, flotisaatiolla is a crucial step for concentrating valuable minerals from crushed ore. Chemicals called collectors are added to the ore pulp, which selectively adsorb onto the surface of the desired mineral particles, making them hydrophobic (water-repellent). Frothers are also introduced to create a stable froth layer at the surface. Air is then blown through the mixture, and the hydrophobic mineral particles attach to the air bubbles and are carried to the surface, forming a mineral-rich froth that can be skimmed off. Gangue (waste material) particles, which remain hydrophilic, do not attach to the bubbles and sink to the bottom.

In wastewater treatment, flotisaatiolla is employed to remove suspended solids, oils, and greases. Dissolved air flotation (DAF) is a common technique where air is dissolved under pressure into the water. When the pressure is released, micro-bubbles form and attach to the suspended contaminants, causing them to float to the surface for removal. This process is effective in reducing turbidity and removing pollutants.
