In mineral processing, they are employed in froth flotation, a process that separates valuable minerals from waste rock. The ore is ground into a fine powder and mixed with water to form a slurry. Chemicals are added to selectively attach to the desired mineral particles, making them hydrophobic. Air is then bubbled through the slurry in the flotation cell. The hydrophobic mineral particles attach to the air bubbles and rise to the surface, forming a froth that is skimmed off.
