Flotaatiosäiliöt, also known as flotation cells or flotation tanks, are essential equipment used in mineral processing and wastewater treatment. In mineral processing, they are employed in froth flotation, a process that separates valuable minerals from waste rock. The ore is ground into a fine powder and mixed with water to form a slurry. Chemicals are added to selectively attach to the desired mineral particles, making them hydrophobic. Air is then bubbled through the slurry in the flotation cell. The hydrophobic mineral particles attach to the air bubbles and rise to the surface, forming a froth that is skimmed off.

In wastewater treatment, flotation tanks are used to remove suspended solids, oils, and greases. Similar to mineral processing, air is introduced into the tank, causing suspended particles to attach to the bubbles and float to the surface for removal. This process is effective in clarifying water and reducing the organic load.

Flotation cells come in various designs, including mechanical agitation cells and pneumatic cells. Mechanical cells use impellers to mix the slurry and disperse air, while pneumatic cells rely on diffused air to create the necessary aeration. The efficiency of a flotation cell depends on factors such as cell volume, air supply, agitation intensity, and chemical dosages. They are a critical component in many industrial operations, enabling the recovery of valuable resources and the purification of water.
