Flexiblesem

Flexible semantics, often abbreviated as flexiblesem, refers to an approach in natural language processing (NLP) and artificial intelligence where the meaning of words and phrases is not fixed but can adapt or be influenced by context. This contrasts with more rigid semantic models that assign a single, predefined meaning to linguistic units.

In traditional semantic systems, a word like "bank" might have distinct entries for "financial institution" and "river edge." Contextual information is then used to disambiguate between these pre-defined meanings. Flexiblesem, however, posits that the meaning itself can be more fluid. For example, the interpretation of "bank" in a sentence like "I went to the bank to deposit money" might involve a semantic representation that is not just a static entry but a dynamic construct influenced by the surrounding words "deposit" and "money."

This adaptability allows NLP systems to handle nuances, metaphors, and evolving language use more effectively. Instead of relying solely on a large lexicon of fixed meanings, flexiblesem models might utilize vector representations or other distributional methods that capture semantic relationships based on how words co-occur in vast amounts of text. This enables a more granular understanding of meaning that can shift subtly depending on the specific linguistic environment. Applications can include more sophisticated question answering, sentiment analysis, and machine translation systems that better grasp the subtleties of human communication.
