Flammebehandlet refers to a surface that has been modified by applying a controlled flame. The technique is primarily used to improve adhesion, wettability, or appearance of a material by altering its outermost layer. It is most common on plastics, especially polyolefins such as polyethylene and polypropylene, which are naturally resistant to bonding due to low surface energy. A hydrocarbon flame (often propane or natural gas) is passed quickly over the surface, typically for a fraction of a second to a few seconds. The brief heat oxidizes the surface and creates a thin, polar functional layer that increases the surface energy and enables better coating, printing, or gluing.

Process considerations and materials: The treatment is designed to be fast and suitable for inline production, using equipment such as belt or roller systems that traverse the flame over the moving substrate. Temperature control is critical to avoid melting or deformation. The effects can vary by polymer type and processing conditions, and the enhanced surface properties can diminish over time due to aging or contamination if coatings are not applied promptly.

Other uses and interpretations: In woodworking, a related concept involves briefly exposing a surface to flame to produce a charred layer for aesthetic or protective purposes, a technique akin to the traditional Shou Sugi Ban. In metal or other materials, flame exposure may clean or condition surfaces, but the primary industrial use remains polymer adhesion enhancement.
