Fifthgrade

Fifth grade is the fifth year of formal elementary or primary education in many systems. It follows fourth grade and precedes sixth grade. In the United States, students are typically 10 to 11 years old. The naming and structure vary by country, with some systems calling this level Year 6 or Grade 5 in primary schools. It frequently marks a shift toward more independent study.

Curricula typically cover mathematics, language arts, science, and social studies, with greater emphasis on application and written communication. Math topics include fractions, decimals, percentages, geometry, measurement, and problem-solving. Language arts focuses on reading comprehension, vocabulary, writing conventions, and longer writing projects. Science often combines earth and space, life, and physical science, while social studies explores communities, civics, and geography.

Assessment combines classroom work, quizzes, and projects; in some places standardized tests may be used. Students develop study and collaboration skills, as well as research and presentation abilities, to support transition to middle school and further coursework.

Classroom structure varies; some schools assign one teacher for multiple subjects, while others use subject-specific teachers. Fifth grade is often the final year of elementary school in many districts, with a planned move to middle school and changes in routines, expectations, and scheduling.
