Feudalny

Feudalny is an adjective in Polish describing anything related to feudalism, a medieval political, economic and social system in which land ownership and political power were organized through a hierarchy of lords and vassals. At its core was the grant of land, or a fief, by a lord to a vassal in return for military service, loyalty and other obligations. The vassal, in turn, could grant portions of the land to lower tenants and was responsible for its defence and governance; the economic counterpart was largely agrarian and based on the manor system, with peasants or serfs working the land under duties and rents.

Feudal relationships were built on personal bonds—homage and fealty—rather than centralized bureaucratic authority. Political authority was often diffuse: lords controlled land, justice, and military resources within their territories, while the monarch’s power depended on vassal support. The system varied by region but shared the general pattern of reciprocal duties and hierarchical social structure, with a marked distinction between nobles, clergy, and peasants.

In historiography, feudalny is used to describe characteristics and institutions of feudal society, including feudal law, feudal dues, and feudal rights. The term is largely analytical; its practical forms differed across Europe and evolved over time, eventually giving way to centralized states, monetary economies, urbanization, and changes in land tenure.
