Fettsäurefluss refers to the movement and metabolic processing of fatty acids within an organism. Fatty acids are crucial energy sources and building blocks for cell membranes. Their flux describes how they are transported, utilized, stored, and synthesized.

The process begins with the absorption of dietary fats, which are broken down into fatty acids and glycerol in the digestive system. These are then reassembled into triglycerides and packaged into chylomicrons for transport via the lymphatic system and bloodstream. In tissues, lipoprotein lipase breaks down triglycerides, releasing free fatty acids.

These free fatty acids can enter cells through specific transporter proteins. Once inside, they can be used immediately for energy production through beta-oxidation in the mitochondria, or they can be stored as triglycerides in adipose tissue for later use. Alternatively, fatty acids can be synthesized de novo within the cell, a process known as lipogenesis, primarily occurring in the liver and adipose tissue.

The regulation of fatty acid flux is tightly controlled by hormonal signals like insulin and glucagon, as well as cellular energy status. Insulin promotes fatty acid uptake and storage, while glucagon stimulates fatty acid release from adipose tissue and oxidation. Disruptions in fatty acid flux are implicated in various metabolic disorders, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Understanding fatty acid flux is therefore vital for comprehending metabolic health and disease.
