Fehérjedússág is a Hungarian term that translates to "protein deficiency" or "protein malnutrition." It refers to a state where the body does not receive an adequate amount of protein, which is essential for numerous bodily functions, including building and repairing tissues, producing enzymes and hormones, and supporting the immune system.

Protein deficiency can arise from several factors. Insufficient dietary intake of protein-rich foods is the most common cause, particularly in regions where access to diverse food sources is limited or in populations with restrictive diets. Inadequate absorption of protein due to digestive disorders or certain medical conditions can also contribute. Furthermore, increased protein requirements during periods of rapid growth, pregnancy, lactation, or severe illness can lead to a deficiency if intake does not keep pace.

The symptoms of fehérjedússág can vary depending on the severity and duration of the deficiency. Mild cases might manifest as fatigue, weakness, and increased susceptibility to infections. More severe protein deficiency can lead to kwashiorkor, a form of severe malnutrition characterized by edema (swelling, particularly in the abdomen and legs), a distended belly, skin changes, hair depigmentation, and a weakened immune system. In children, protein deficiency can impair growth and development, leading to stunting.

Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination, dietary assessment, and blood tests to measure protein levels. Treatment focuses on increasing protein intake through a balanced diet that includes sources like meat, poultry, fish, dairy products, eggs, legumes, and nuts. In severe cases, nutritional support may involve therapeutic foods or intravenous feeding. Prevention is key and involves ensuring access to and consumption of a protein-sufficient diet.
