Fehmarnbelt

The Fehmarnbelt is a strait in the Baltic Sea, separating the German island of Fehmarn from the Danish island of Lolland. It is approximately 18 kilometers wide at its narrowest point and forms part of the maritime boundary between Germany and Denmark. The Fehmarnbelt is a significant shipping route, connecting the Baltic Sea to the Belt Sea and the wider North Sea.

Currently, a major infrastructure project is underway to connect the Fehmarnbelt by tunnel. The Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link will be a submerged tunnel, comprising immersed tube elements, designed to provide a continuous link between Germany and Denmark. This tunnel aims to improve transport efficiency and reduce travel times, further solidifying the Fehmarnbelt's importance as a transit corridor in Northern Europe. The project involves significant engineering challenges due to the depth and geological conditions of the strait.
