Fehmarn

Fehmarn is a German island in the Baltic Sea, located in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. It lies north of the Bay of Lübeck and is separated from the German mainland by the Fehmarn Sound. Across the Fehmarn Belt lies the Danish island of Lolland; a long-planned fixed link between Denmark and Germany is being built to replace ferry traffic, a project expected to connect via a submerged tunnel with road and rail capacity.

The island is administratively part of the Ostholstein district; Burg auf Fehmarn is the capital. The population is around 12,000. The area is about 185 square kilometers; the terrain is flat, with farmland and a coastline featuring beaches and cliffs.

Transport: The island is connected to the mainland by the Fehmarnsund Bridge near Großenbrode and by regular ferries from Puttgarden to Rødby. The Fehmarn Belt Fixed Link is under construction, planned to carry road and rail traffic between Denmark and Germany; completion is anticipated in the late 2020s or early 2030s.

Economy: Tourism is important, with beaches, cycling routes, and birdlife at coastal wetlands; agriculture including vegetables and fruit; wind energy development.
