Fedeznövények

Fedeznövények, also known as cover crops or green manure, are plants cultivated primarily to benefit the soil rather than for harvest. They are typically sown between cash crop cycles or intercropped with main crops. The primary functions of fedeznövények include improving soil fertility, preventing erosion, suppressing weeds, and enhancing soil structure.

Different types of fedeznövények are chosen based on specific agricultural goals. Leguminous cover crops, such as clover and vetch, are particularly valuable for their ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen, enriching the soil with this essential nutrient. Non-leguminous cover crops, like rye and oats, excel at scavenging excess nutrients from the soil, preventing them from leaching away, and adding significant biomass. Buckwheat is known for its rapid growth and ability to suppress weeds and improve phosphorus availability.

When fedeznövények reach a certain stage of growth, they are usually incorporated into the soil, a process known as "plowing under" or "green manuring."
