Fatehpur

Fatehpur is a toponym used for several places in the Indian subcontinent, particularly in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The name Fatehpur combines Persian and Urdu elements meaning “city of victory.” In Uttar Pradesh the most widely known places bearing the name are Fatehpur Sikri and Fatehpur district, with Fatehpur city as its administrative center.

Fatehpur Sikri is a historic city located in the Agra district, about 35 kilometers southwest of Agra. It was founded by Mughal emperor Akbar in 1571 and served as the capital of the Mughal Empire for about a decade before being abandoned largely due to water shortages. The architectural complex preserves several notable structures, including Buland Darwaza, Jama Masjid, Panch Mahal and the Tomb of Salim Chisti, illustrating Mughal urban planning and imperial patronage.

Fatehpur district is a district in Uttar Pradesh. The district’s administrative headquarters are in the city of Fatehpur. Like many districts in the region, its economy is predominantly based on agriculture and rural communities, with various crops and local industries contributing to local employment and commerce.
