Farxiga

Farxiga is a brand name for the medication dapagliflozin. It belongs to a class of drugs known as sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors. These medications work by blocking the reabsorption of glucose in the kidneys, leading to more glucose being excreted in the urine. This mechanism helps to lower blood sugar levels in individuals with type 2 diabetes.

Farxiga is prescribed as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes. In addition to its glucose-lowering effects, Farxiga has also demonstrated cardiovascular and renal benefits. Studies have shown that it can reduce the risk of cardiovascular death and hospitalization for heart failure in certain patient populations, as well as slow the progression of chronic kidney disease.

The medication is taken orally, usually once a day. Common side effects can include urinary tract infections and genital yeast infections due to the increased glucose in the urine. This medication is not intended for use in individuals with type 1 diabetes or for the treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis.
