Farbmolekül

Farbmolekül is a German term that translates to "color molecule" or "dye molecule" in English. It refers to a molecule or ion that is responsible for the color of a substance. The color we perceive is due to the selective absorption and reflection of different wavelengths of visible light by these molecules.

The ability of a farbmolekül to absorb light in the visible spectrum arises from its electronic structure. Specifically, the presence of conjugated systems, which are alternating single and double bonds, or the presence of heteroatoms with non-bonding electrons, often leads to delocalized electrons. These delocalized electrons can absorb energy from photons of light, causing them to transition to a higher energy state. The specific wavelengths of light that are absorbed depend on the energy difference between these electronic states, which is determined by the molecular structure.

When white light, which contains all visible wavelengths, strikes a colored substance, the farbmoleküle within it absorb certain wavelengths. The wavelengths of light that are not absorbed are reflected or transmitted. The color we observe is the combination of the wavelengths that are reflected or transmitted. For example, a molecule that absorbs blue light will appear yellow because the remaining wavelengths (green, yellow, orange, red) are reflected.
