Fahrschein

A Fahrschein is the ticket or travel pass that entitles its holder to use public transportation, such as buses, trams, trains and other services. The term is widely used in German-speaking countries and denotes the proof of entitlement to travel. In Germany and Austria Fahrschein is the standard word; in some Swiss regions Fahrkarte or Billette is more common, but Fahrschein is generally understood.

Fahrschein can be physical or digital. It may be issued as Einzelfahrschein (single ride), Tagesfahrschein (day ticket), Wochenfahrschein (week ticket), Monatsfahrschein (month ticket) or Jahresfahrschein (annual ticket). Many systems also use zone-based tariffs or distance-based pricing, with products designed for different travel needs. The exact validity depends on the product type and the local tariff rules.

Before or after boarding, depending on the system, a Fahrschein must be validated or activated. Paper tickets may require stamping or validation at a reader; digital tickets are often scanned or automatically activated via a mobile app. Travelers must carry a valid Fahrschein and present it upon request by fare inspectors. Traveling without a valid Fahrschein is typically treated as fare evasion and can incur fines or penalties.

In recent years the use of digital Fahrscheine has increased, with mobile apps and digital wallets allowing purchase, storage and presentation of tickets. This shift is part of a broader move toward contactless and paper-free ticketing in public transport, alongside traditional paper tickets and physical cards.
