Faasijakoa

Faasijakoa is a coastal municipality in the archipelago of Noretia, located on the eastern shore of Valtara Bay. The town sits on a small crescent of coastline with several inlets and a natural harbor. As of the latest census, Faasijakoa has about 7,800 residents and covers roughly 38 square kilometers.

The name Faasijakoa derives from the local language, combining elements meaning water and junction, in reference to its position between two tidal channels where ships historically gathered. The town originated as a fishing village in the 14th century and grew through trade with nearby islands. It attained municipal status in the 19th century and developed a modern harbor after mid-20th century infrastructure investments.

Faasijakoa is governed by a mayor-council system. The council, comprised of nine members elected for four-year terms, selects a mayor who serves as head of government. The council sets budgets and local ordinances, while day-to-day administration is managed by a town manager.

The economy centers on fishing and seafood processing, supplemented by small shipyards, aquaculture, and tourism. The harbor accommodates ferries and fishing vessels, and local businesses provide guesthouses, restaurants, and craft shops. The cultural life includes a coastal heritage center, a weekly market, and the annual Faasifest.

Education includes two primary schools and one secondary school. The population is predominantly Faasic-speaking, with a minority of Aran speakers. The town participates in regional environmental programs protecting coastal wetlands and promoting renewable-energy projects.
