FSH, or follicle-stimulating hormone, is a glycoprotein hormone produced by the anterior pituitary gland in the brain. It plays a crucial role in the reproductive system, particularly in the regulation of the menstrual cycle in females and sperm production in males. FSH acts on the ovaries and testes, stimulating the development and maturation of follicles in the ovaries and the production of sperm in the testes.

In females, FSH levels fluctuate throughout the menstrual cycle. They are highest during the follicular phase, when they stimulate the growth of follicles in the ovaries. The follicle with the highest FSH level will typically become the dominant follicle and release an egg during ovulation. After ovulation, FSH levels drop, and the corpus luteum, which forms from the follicle, produces progesterone under the influence of luteinizing hormone (LH).

In males, FSH stimulates the production of sperm and the development of the seminiferous tubules in the testes. It also plays a role in the development of the male reproductive tract.

FSH levels can be measured in blood tests to diagnose various conditions, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), hypogonadism, and infertility. Treatment with FSH or FSH-like substances may be used to stimulate ovulation in women with infertility or to treat hypogonadism in men.
